what happens when you step on gas?
I know it seems like a dumb question, but what exactly happens when you step on the gas pedal? I always though that doing so squirted more gas into the engine. A gearhead friend of mine said that on a 22re, when you step on the gas it actually lets more air in, not fuel. Is this true?

When you step on the gas, you open the throttle plate, which allows more airflow. This airflow increase is sensed by the Volume Airflow Meter, which tells the ECM to squirt more fuel through the injectors. The amount of fuel going through the injectors is adjusted by changing the length of time that the injectors are open.

Yes. When you step on the gas pedal, it opens the throttle plate more, allowing more air in, which the ECU reads through various sensors, then, determining how much fuel is needed per the amount of air flowing in and out of the engine, it increases or decreases the rate at which the injectors open to allow fuel in.
