what is this from? (differential)

hey guys,
MY best friend bought a truck not the long ago and was given a bunch of goodies with the truck, including this carrier and ring gear. we were told it was for a Toyota 8inch, but when we went to go put it in his 85' pickup it didn't fit. the barrings were bigger then the 85' races. we tried to put in the front axle.

the truck it self is kinda pieced together so i could be that he has a somthing different going on with his truck. so maybe you can help me figure out what this is out of and what it will fit in.
thanks
Tyler

Yeah, that's an 8" alright. But it's a 4-pinion from a V6/Turbo, not a 2-pinion, so it wont fit in a 4cyl 3rd member. Unless you buy conversion bearings. They're only available from one place that I'm aware of. And they're kinda spendy, $39.95 each + shipping, and you'll need 2.

Here's the site.

After closer examination, I do see something different from the standard 8" 4-pinion open differential.

Here's my spare(no r&p) V6 3rd member for comparison. It has an open diff, no locker/LSD.

Notice that there's a hole in the middle. That's the spider, for the 4 "pinions" or spider gears.

So, since it appears to not be there on yours, there's definetely something going on in there that isn't an open differential.

Locker or LSD? That is the question. Let me look around a bit more...see if I can't dig something up...I really should know all about this by now...how embarassing...

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
Ok, locker, no.

LSD, maybe, but I don't think so. (it's not)

It looks like the open diff 4 pinion V6/Turbo unit to me.

Post a pic of the plates you see...
