What diff do I have?

You tell me. As in what's the axle code?
Don't know? Here's how you find out.

For future reference, this is newbie tech(there's a forum for that...which is why it was moved here). And please search first before posting new threads.
Thanks!

A simple search would have probably answered your question.
Here is another good link:

unless it's a 2wd then 7.5" Rear but even then some 2wd's came with 8's as well. (although I have never seen one). To be completely accurate you have to find the gear code on your vin plate. And that's only going to assume a previous owner never changed it.

Cool! I was pretty sure I hadn't imagined it being in the 86-95 Trucks & 4Runners forum...
Good idea too BTW.
Right. Though, in reality, there's no way of assuring the complete accuracy of the code on the information plate either. Mine's off by one number for instance, it reads G292 but should be G294(verified by removal/disassembly, and the fact that most V6s shouldn't have an axle code that ends in 2, it's almost always supposed to be 4). Regardless, it's still the most accurate method. Aside from tearing the diffs apart and visually inspecting/physically measuring the various components.

There's a thread on pirate about it somewhere actually. But, it's regarding swapping JUST the carrier and ring and pinion from an IFS 7.5" to a 2WD 7.5" rear. NOT the entire 3rd member(which isn't what an IFS has in the front technically speaking anyways, so of course you couldn't). IIRC, those parts aren't even all compatible either. Later than ? V6 IFS front axles have a different carrier(bigger carrier bearings) than a 4 cyl. IFS or 2WD rear(which are the same). And the ring and pinion, namely the pinion, is also slightly different between IFS and 2WD(not sure, but I believe it's the length of the flange splines or threaded portion where the nut goes?) though it may still be swappable between all 3 types of 7.5" axles(there's a 4th type too, the 2WD Supra 7.5" axle, again no 3rd member so it's like an IFS that way, but internally it's exactly the same as a PU's 2WD 7.5" 3rd member, so should be categorized with it as a 2WD 7.5" as far as that goes...so 3 types for the sake of this argument). If I get bored enough, I'll dig that up...

be careful putting locker meant for front applications in the rear and vise versa. Not sure about any other ones, but if its a detroit you have to do a few things to convert it into a rear and vise versa.
And a straight axle yota has 8" diffs front and rear. It also depends on if your talking high pinion diff or not whether the ring and pinion can or cannot be used back and forth. I can't remember off hand but you have to be careful if the gears are reverse cut or not, they will work just not nearly as strong.
