Vin codes
Does anyone know the differences of RN and LN vins? And is there any difference between a RN60, RN61, and a RN63? My 86 has a RN63 vin and whenever I look up parts for my truck and I need to look up parts by the vin my vin is not even an option to click on. I have also seen LN60, LN61, or LN65 and so on.

Are you using your full VIN or just partial VIN?
What vehicle are you working on? From your post, I can probably guess a 1980's Toyota 4WD truck or 4Runner.
The RN chassis code denotes that a R series gasoline engine was installed on the chassis such as the 18R, 20R, 22R, 22R-E, etc.
The LN chassis code denotes that an L series diesel engine was installed in the chassis such as the L, and 2L engines.
The two digit number denotes the chassis type depending on which model the frame was designed for. There are different chassis codes for two wheel drive versus four wheel drive as well as differences in cab and bed length configuration.
Here is where it gets confusing. Toyota's chassis codes do not always match up to the VIN designation, but is often close like your RN63. Sometimes the VIN designation number will be different by a few digits to indicate that it is part of a certain frame family but has something to differentiate it from the base chassis code. I have not figured out how to tell what base chassis code goes with which VIN designation yet.
My brother's 1990 Toyota Corolla Wagon has a chassis code of AE92 but the VIN designation is AE94.
You can check for the chassis code on the frame by the right front wheel well. It should be on a raised flat part of the frame in the form of the chassis code (i.e. RN50) and the last seven digits of your VIN.
Example: RN50 ~ 1234567
I hope that helps a little.
