Vibration when 4WD id disengaged...

So, I just installed the bilstein 5100 shocks on my 06 tacoma DC. The shocks were set to have a 1.5" lift for the front to level it out. Immediately after install there was a vibration (like a tire rub or cyclical vibration of ridges rubbing somewhere) so I took and double checked the work and nothing was rubbing. Then I started systematically trying to determine where the issue was. As soon as I engage the 4WD the vibration stops, but when disengaged it does it again. I suspected that it might be the alignment, however just had it aligned a few hrs ago and no dice. Curious if any one knows or has any idea what might be the issue.

I just had a full alignment done, could it be that I need a differential drop with the new lift? I didn't think I would with it only being 1.5"

Just took it into the dealer and they said it was most likely a differential, and said I'd be better off spending $2100 to replace it... How hard is it to rebuild a front end diff?

why would it be the front diff if it does it when the front is not turning?? maybe a u joint on the driveline?? does it happen only at certain times and speeds or all the time??

cougar is right, the only thing i can think of if it was the front diff, is that the hubs werent disengaging, but then it would make noise in 4x4 also. so i dont think its any of the diffs...

Those are great questions, I called the tech and asked the same question, he elaborated that the noise was most likely the bearings in the the diff that took the weight when the 4WD was disengaged. however he'd seen "a lot of metal shavings" when he'd drained the fluid out, suggesting that the gears might or "probably are" worn or bad. He informed me further that since changing the bearings would require breaking the diff out and open, it'd be just as well to rebuild it at the same time.

If any one can call BS on this I welcome it, as I really would like a more precise and cost effective way to solve the issue.

anyone know where to buy a 06 tacoma front diff rebuild kit?

did you get a lift kit? or just longer struts that are made for a 1.5 lift kit?

It occurs at pretty much all speeds while in 2WD, however it is the resinates the most at 10mph and 35mph...
