Vacuum advance??? Timing
I just rebuilt my 22R oversized valves, oversized pistons(.040), 268 RV cam, 38 weber carb. I drive from sea level to 6,000 - 8,000 ft. With transitions in temps from 50 degrees to below freezing. Recently discovered my vacuum advance no longer works, now from what I understand my power band at 3000rpm should be considerably less, if none at all, yet I dont feal any loss of power that I can tell. These are my symptoms:
1: the truck surges with power when in nuetral like it hits a deep puddle of water in the road.(not misssing) this accurs mostly in cold weather, but runs fine at higher speed.
2: sometimes when I first hit the gas peddle jump it to 2500 - 3000 rpms and jump off it dies, but starts just fine.
would the vacuum advance do this or are these potentialy other problems.
With this setup I have in my motor what would be the best timing to adjust it at.

You want your vacuun advance to be hooked up and working, it advances the timming as the rpm`s go up, wich will give you more power and better performance. The vacuum advance unit can go bad, and is very expensive to replace, its cheaper to replace the whole distributor.
