Would it make sense to run twinsticks on my stock 4runner t-case?

 

The only "disadvantages" are cost and installation difficulty.

The only real benefit is it gives you 2LOW ...

 

plus it looks sweet to have em! haha just playin. so is there any difference in having 2 low and just putting your t-case in 4-low without locking the hubs?

 

Yeah, when you get stuck, you flip the lever to 4WD and off you go...

I knew it would give me 2 low, I just wanted to know if it would make sense to go twinsticks with stock tcase and gears. What would it do if I shifted one lever to 2 low and the other to 4 high? would it make the rears spin slower than the fronts? Would it even make a difference?


Now that I think about it, I probably need to get sliders before the twinsticks anyway...

 

twin sticks gives you 2 hi 4 hi 4 lo and 2 lo...nothing changes between the wheels except driven and not driven.

 

A lot of work for very little.

 

Twin sticks on a Toyota case is pretty silly and pointless, in MOST applications. If you hardcore rock crawling, maybe. But for Average street driver Joe, twin sticks are a waste of money. IMO.

 

The other advantage is that, should you break a CV, you can drive out in low range without spinning your CV, which you cannot do by just unlocking your hubs. On our HC run, this would have been invaluable when TC broke a CV, had the CV not gotten up into his brakes. If it had been a normal break, he could have driven to a flatter area, gotten the CV changed, and been on the way much more quickly.

I have em, and love em. They enable me to unlock my front ARB MUCH easier when my drivetrain is bound up.

Shift into 2wd, still in low, and I can steer again instantly.

 

binding up the front end is exactly why I am putting this in...should help till I can afford some Longfields
Front Range Off Road Twin stick, should make turning a little easier with the front locker. I like their design and workmanship better than some of the others on the market, plus the shift boot comes with the kit, not an add on like some on the market...

i have my TC out so I can add the extra case so thought now was the time to put one in, less work if I changed my mind...

no. Sure, you are only driving the rear wheels, and you can do the locker thing, but not the broken thing. With FF fronts, you can just unlock hubs, go to two low, and drive out on broken front diffs/axles, etc...which is more likely than a rear on an IFS truck.

 

Wow I didn't even know we had these for our Toyota's. I've been considering installing a aussie locker in the front of my 4runner, but thought I'd need to convert to manual hubs to make sharp turns. The hubs would probably set me back $100, so $190 for this seems like a smoking deal. I've always liked the convience of my auto hubs. Plus the extra $90 is worth it for the coolness factor of twin sticks.

 

Mine bind up pretty bad and are often quite hard to shift from 4WD to 2WD ... I would hate to be counting on that to be able to turn...

 

This is exactly the response I was looking for.

So without having dual cases or a locker in the front, it really makes no sense to run twinsticks, unless I want 2 low. For now I'm calling 2 low a $150-$200 option so that really doesn't make sense.
