I just picked a 1st gen 4runner. I have never really been out 4 wheelin before. I went out today and got on a fairly steep incline where I turned the truck off. BAD MOVE. I decided to move the truck off the trail and it wouldn't start. It had full power, meaning the battery wasn't dead, the engine wouldn't turn over. The next issue was, I had pulled the E brake, I thought I could just take it off and roll back down. When I released the brake everything was locked up. I attempted to switch back into two wheel drive and this was locked up also. At this point, I though possibly the motor seized up some how, SO I prayed to God and it started. !! Now what the hell happened??!!

 

i dont know if this helps any but mine did the exact same thing last weekend on me, except for the locking up. i just figured that it was that there was no gas getting to engine. i wanna hear what other people think it is. im definetly subscribing.

 

i would say the carb did it. carbs and steep hills dont mix well

Wouldn't turn over like the starter didn't do anything? Or the motor just cranked and cranked...?

Well, you're not going to get anything out of the transfercase with it all bound up on a hill like that. You could have "possibly" disegaged the hubs(assuming you don't have ADD) to help that but probably not, idk. The drums probably were bound up too depending on how well they are mated to each other...

 

maybe didnt have the clutch in all the way, I have had this happen to me where it wont start and it is because i dont have the pedal all the way down.

 

ah yes, clutch start switch...hmmmmmm.

 

I have mine not start bc the tab on pedal bent and didn't push the plunger in, so clutch start was the only way to start it, which made me look under the dash and find the problem.

Maybe you should pray more often?

 

I forgot to put the key in once...

 

i forgot my keys once, grabbed the flathead srewdriver in my glovebox, stuck it in the ignition and fired it right up, drove up to the house and grabbed the keys LOL

 

The starter didn't do anything, no cranking at all.

To those that said I didn't have the clutch in all the way, thats what it seemed like, but I was standing on that puppy, because thats what I thought at first. What does the clutch start button thing do anyways??

The clutch start switch is a safety over ride so you HAVE to put the clutch in to start the truck. The switch on the dash allows you to bypass that switch for situations like you had. Stuck on a hill. That way you can use the starter while the truck is in gear.

 

maybe the clutch switch is going bad, if it does it again try the clutch start cancel and see if that does it!! I left the keys in the runner the other day, had to use another key I had for something else to get it open. it needs new door locks!!

 

Its a pretty common problem for "22re" to have a "no start" condition on very step inclines. Because of where the fuel pump sits in the gas tank on these yotas when and an incline "nose up" the liquid "gas" will have moved all the way back into the back and bottom of the tank and exposing the fuel pump to well almost nothing. Letting it roll back down onto flatter ground a few cranks and the engine would fire it up. "But" this usually only happens on "really really" steep inclines.

 

But it could have very well been something faulty like the clutch switch people are talking about.

 

i dont think it was a fuel issue because he said it didnt crank. but i see what you are saying about the fuel. thats good to know so if I ever do go crawlin some day!!

 

Ah my eyes missed the "no turn over part"

 

Had that happen to an old 3.0 runner and i just had to push the clutch in 3 or 4 times to get it to crank... clutch safety swtich. If you want just bypass it and never have to push the clutch again!
