Transfer Case Problems!!

Some is wrong with my 4 wheel drive. it used to work fine until i was out wheelin a pretty simple trail, put it in 4 to make it up a hill. but when i got to the top i could smell burning oil and my tranfer case was smoking. i made it back in 2 wheel with no other problems. then i went out again and had to go into 4 to get over some big rocks and the same thing happened. any ideas?

Have you checked the gear oil level?

I think the question still stands, did YOU check the oil level. I once had a shop (at a dealer no less) change my oil and I took in some oil for them to use. When I picked up the vehicle, the oil I brought was still in back so I figured they used their own. Then I check the oil and could find nothing on the dip stick. I think they must have drained it but not refilled it. I put in my oil and never went back to that place again.
