Trailer wiring question

Just installed a trailer wire harness and when I went to test it everything was fine until I tested the taillights and I blew the fuse. This is a plug in type harness so I don't know what could be wrong? But I tried it again just to be sure it wasn't just freak timing and it blew it again. All I was doing was using a digital voltage reader and touched the neg lead to the groung on the trailer plug and as soon as I put the positive lead into the tailight plug on the trailer plug it blows my trucks taillight fuse. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Is your meter set to read volts (good) or amps (= short). Make sure the leads are in the correct spots (don't ask how I know)
