Toyota Mudding

Arrow Toyota Mudding

Im thinking of getting a pre-85 toyota truck for strictly offroad/mudding use. I plan on welding the diffs front and back, running 33" tires with stock gears, making a homemade snorkel, and shedding as much weight as possible (tailgate, maybe the bed, doors?, hood?, ect.).

Does this sound good?

Has anybody here ever done anything like this before? (mud raced a toyota).

Any other recommendations on other things to do?

I am on a VERY tight budget at the moment.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

If you're gunna be mudding get an old chevy with a 350 and befier axles and some 40 inch boggers....

You would bog down pretty easily with the small 4 cyl and stock gears and 33's if they were fat tires, you need lots of power in the mud...

just as a trail mud rig it would be great..

my trail rig is ifs no lift just a locked rear and it gets anywhere...just gotta take a different line or use a little skinny pedal...

wise idea getting a offroad truck and not beating the DD.

Agreed, with 89silverpu. As much as I love Toyotas for just about every situation, mud bogging would not be there strong point. It takes very large tires (bigger than 33's) and plenty of power to spin them. A friend of mine has an 85 Toyota with a small block 350, now thats another story.

a 85 would be reliable and great for that.. welded front and rear would be great but upgrade the birfs

Toyota's are awesome for trails with some slop on them and a solid axle has no advantage in the mud except it is stronger, actually ifs is better because it has more ground clearance, but not as strong for larger tires.

But since you asked about mud racing...thats all about horsepower and traction aka large mud tires and lockers

i would leave the bed and hood on.. also i run a open diff in the front so i can steer better down the track!

That's a nice lookin yota they definitely can be used for mud racing however they do not compare to a rig with a big block or small block and fat tires, they can be had for as cheap or cheaper than yota's too, there's a bunch of them chilling in fields not being used

thanks.. Ive owned and raced a v8 yota. it was an 86 with a 355 sbc bored over forged pistons balanced steel crank headers etc.. it was fun. now i only race in the v6/4cyl class.. i love whooping up on v6's

Well, where I would be racing it at, they have a 4/6 cylinder stock class ( no MAJOR modifications). I was hoping to compete in that just for fun. While winning would be nice, its mainly just for fun.


Toyota 1, what kind of tires are you running?

x on the chevy... to do mud boggin you need BIG tires and LOTS of power. the 350 is strong enough on the street... once you put it into 4low, that thing will roar its way through ANYTHING.... a buddy of mine had a c/20 4x4 with a 350 and 38's. that sucker slung mud all over the place... come to think about it... i never once saw it clean after he brought it home.

No one has mentioned it yet, but tires make a huge difference!! If you can afford them get some Interco Super Swampers, they are made specifically for mud but there are a ton of good tires out there it just depends on your price range

Well, I understand that chevies are beast in the mud, but I also plan on going on some trails, and a bit rock crawling... From what Ive heard, those big chevies are not so good at that.

yes, tires make or break a mud rig. you could have the big tires and power, but if you got street tread or A/T tread, you'll most likely get stuck. well, street tires definitely. with a/ts im not so sure... my A/Ts have done fine in mud. they just dont clean themselves well. get swampers as reccomended by 89silverpu

you'd be surprised what my buddys chevy did... solid front axle he did himself (it came with IFS... weird huh?) it would climb rocks like no other. i used to call it the hummerwannabe, before i realized how bad hummers suck.
