I know on my 22RE, (which it doesn't look like that's what's in the picture) those are supposed to have vacuum lines coming off of them and going to some where......Looks like there are little caps on yours. I bet wherever the other end of the line is meant to be routed has a cap on it too.

Actually, I was thinking the same thing, and kinda miffed, although I just bought my 97 Ltd last year and JUST had my first emissions test last month, and passed. Here's the thing...I saw those on MINE, but that pic looks EXACTLY like mine, but NOT MINE. It was from the tech write up on here "cleaning your throttle body"...I saw the pic and was amazed...the weird little caps are identical. Then I started noticing them on other pics here and there...and being a former mustang junky got to thinking...maybe extra injector ports for supercharger? Probably not, but again, that was the mustang mentality coming back to haunt me...

you got me....like I said, I am SLOWLY bumping my learning curve...
not sure what the TB in the pic belongs to, just certain those two capped lines are on mine as well. I have a '97 Ltd 6 cyl, whatever that engine code is.

Those ports are only active if you paid extra for the "auto-inflating co-pilot" optional equipment. If the ports are plugged and you don't have the "Auto-Pilot" button on the dash, then the original owner of the vehicle didn't pay for that option. If you do have the button on the dash, those ports are used to inflate and deflate the auto pilot.

I have the button on my dash, but when I mash it, the co-pilot just lays there like the girl in the "don't smoke pot" tv announcement. I have to inflate him manually, and I almost got a ticket for lewd behavior (see AIRPLANE).

Yes, it's the 6 cyl.

From what I can tell, that's a throttle body from a 5VZ-FE. Those are capped off vacuum lines that are not used for anything, so far as I can figure out from my manuals. They came from the factory like that. I would imagine that in a different vehicle, they may be used for something, or they might be used for diagnostics, but don't quote me on that.
