The check engine light has been on in my '97 3.4L Tacoma....had it diagnosed at the dealer as my friends diagnostic machine couldn't pull the code. Dealer says the internal battery in my computer is failing and the whole computer needs replacement.

My plan was to pull the computer, and then swap in a used one. No guarantee the used computer will last all that long if the battery in it goes bad, but it's a start. Truck will not pass inspection as it is due to the computer code problem and it's overdue.

If I pop in a used computer, I am assuming it will need to be "programmed" for my truck? Will it run at all before programming, at least enough to get me to the dealer 30 minutes away? Other option is to take the truck to the dealer's back lot on a Sunday, swap the computers, then have the dealer finish the programming the next day if it will not run. My sense is that it would run, just not optimally.

Thoughts? Messing with vehicle computers is something I have zero experience in, and advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

call this number 1-916-638-2020 and im sure these guys have a correct ready to run replacement computer without having to have the computer reflashed

 

If you can find a computer with the same part number or code number as yours, then it should be plug and play. Most computers are already programed when you buy them for your vehicle.
