T-case and motor ???

T-case and motor ???
So, I finally rebuilt the front axle and went out in the desert to test 4 wheel drive. While I was in 4 wheel, I noticed a grinding sound coming from the t-case. When I got home, I crawled underneath and spun the driveshaft by hand. It sounded like metal on metal when the front shaft was spun but the rear was silent. Also, it would not lock into 4 wheel drive with the shifter (kept poppin out of gear into 2 wheel drive.) I checked the little knob that goes into the round shaft thing with the rubber boot, at the back of the t-case and looked fine (do I get an award for the vaguest parts description). If is needs gear oil, where would it go in? Is the big 23mm bolt in the middle of the first pic the fill plug?
Pics of my t-case.

Also the motor would idle around 500 rpm and then die when I shifted into gear. This sounds like a timing issue to me. Any other ideas?
BTW, Thanks everyone for all your help. Without this site, I would just have a pile of parts in my garage.

that 23mm is the fill plug, and the one on the bottom with a hex is the drain. because yours is an auto, I believe it takes ATF, you may want to double check.
as far as problems go, the t-case issue i believe is seperate from the idling issue. im not real familar with the chain drive cases, but I'd first check the fluid, then go from there.
on the idling issue, it sounds like you just need to bump up your idle... do a search for a 3VZE or 3.0 idle adjustment, and you should find something!
best of luck, and post up what you find.
