swapping a locker

Would a locker from an 85 front axle fit into a rear 94 toyota axle? I know they are both 8" diffs, but i was uncertain if their was spline count differences?

They both have 30 spline axles.

my truck is a 4 cyl. Anyway i would be able to tell if the locker would be from a 4 cly or 6cyl. Its a craigslist find.

Yeah you need to look at where the cross pin sits, for a 4 cyl it is a 2 pinion design so the cross pin is just a cylinder, and there will be 2 recessed spots on the cam gear where the cross pin goes through. For a 6 cyl it is a 4 pinion design, so there are 4 recessed spots on the cam gear where the spider/cross sits. Sorry i can't explain it much better than that, I suggest looking at some pictures from write ups of gear/locker installs and you'll understand what I'm saying.

tell me if im wrong here. I would like to put a locker from an 85 yota FRONT axle into my rear end.

I have a 94 yota. It would have 27 spline. If this locker would have 27 splines as well, it would be a fit. It it would be a v6 locker it would have 30 spline and make it unuseable. Correct me if i am wrong. This is the newb section and i am doing some reading. I looked on zuk;s installs and didnt understand what you ment by the 2 or 4 pinion design.

THe difference between the 4 and 6 cly (and 4cly turbo) diffs is the bearing size and the pinion count., not the spline count. All 8" front and rear are 30 spline. SO all 8" 3rds are interchangeable. Its when you try to put a 6cly carrier in a 4cly housing that you run into trouble, or vise versa.

Your 7.5" IFS is 27 spline.

your truck a 4cly so it will fit.

The 85 30 spline front will fit into your rear. Make sure its the matches your rear gear ratio.

4cly 2 pinion diff

v6 4 pinion diff. (their covered)

Make sense?

Your rear axles on your 94 are 30 spline. The axles from the front of that 85 are also 30 spline. The 4 cyl and 6 cyl rear differentials are both 30 spline.

my truck is a 4 cylinder. I do beleive i understand what you are talking about. I am not swapping 3rd members, only the locker from them. it is a detriot truetrac. These are the only two pictures i have of it. maybe you can tell from the pictures. Because i am kinda lost now.

Just to make sure, you know that a truetrac is just a limited slip, not a full locker right?

I'm not sure for those ones the difference between 4 cyl and v6, I thought you were talking about a lunchbox locker. Setting up a detroit is more work because you need to reset your gear pattern.

i was considering buying this due to the fact it would be in the rear, so my wheels wouldn't be full time locked together. I dont wheel my truck often maybe once a month, or so i need to it be friendly on the street. I already have a lock right in the front and i have absolutely no complaints with it. I don't believe a spool would be for me. Anything you recommend?

I'd recommend a locker similar to your front locker. Either a lock right, aussie locker, or spartan. That way you don't have to set up your gears again after installing it, it just replaces the spider gears.

For a mostly street driven a rear LSD isnt a bad option. The detroits are stronger than a lunch box because they replace the whole carrier.

I think thats a pretty good match for you. How much do they want for it? How How many miles on it?

they wanted $150 for the lsd. Its got 500 miles on it. I was gonna offer $100 picked up that day. Another lock right for the rear maybe the best option thou. For the money of a Detroit and how often i bring my truck out, i cant justify spending the money.

I believe that thing runs about 500 new. So 100 isnt a bad deal.

On the other hand. being locked f&r is pretty sweet. Youll go anywhere.

For a 100 that would be a worthwhile upgrade for the rear. You should reset your gears even if just installing a Lockright. as you have to take the Carrier out to do the install. It is not required but is suggested.
The Truetracs are a Very stout set-up.

Note that trutracs come in a front app and a rear app....ask the guy what the part number is that is scribed on the case.
If it has the rear app part number then you're good to go. If it has the front part number then you should "flip the gears".
The TT is more effective in one direction than the other.
