I'm looking to upgrade parts my 2005 Tacoma, and I was wondering if it would be better to go with the TRD Supercharger for the 4.0L V6 or with the TRD cold air intake?? suggestions are greatly appreciated.

 

well a supercharger will get you more h.p. than a cold air intake lol

maybe because the S/C relocates the throttle body to where the CAI won't directly bolt up. The S/C kit probably comes with it's own intake system.

 

I've helped install a couple of these superchargers, and I don't think it changes the location of the throttle body at all, because of the fact that the one's that I've done have reused that massive filter housing that bolts to the top of the passenger side valve cover. If I get a chance, I'll go take a pic of the supercharged '06 we have here at work.

Got the pictures as promised. I stand corrected. The supercharger moves that entire air box assembly over to the passenger side about an inch or so. Here's some pic's of the mounting.



The circled mount has a bracket that extends it over about an inch.



This is the lower mount on the passenger side valve cover. This mount doesn't get reused, but as you can see, the mount is about an inch to the right of where it used to be.



And here's some engine porn! Now, ten bonus points to whoever can tell me what's wrong with this picture. Emphasis on the supercharger...

Well, I believe it could be done with an aftermarket cold air, like a K&n or something, but I'm not sure about the TRD. Search the internet, or websites like Cardomain.com and look at what other people have done. I know I've seen a couple supercharged trucks with cold air systems on them, but I just dont know which.

On a side note, check out URD performance's. I had a buddy who had that intake on a '07 x-runner in college. The thing was bad

But on a sad note, this motor is knockin like no other, and it's my shop's fault. One of the other technicians did an oil change, and used the wrong filter. The thread size was just slightly bigger, so it "kinda" tightened. It held oil pressure at idle, but when my shop sent it to the detail shop, they called us and said that the truck didnt have any oil in it. The oil pressure pushed the filter off the motor, and blew all the oil out on the road on the way to the shop. Now were waitin on a motor. Total cost? Just over 5k for a junk yard motor with 25k on it and the labor for another tech to put it in, because the guy who did the oil change don't have the brain power to pull the dead motor and put the new one in, then swap everything...

It was a sad day in the shop for Toyotas...

 

All you have to do is trim down the tube that comes with the S.C. for the intake. I've got a 05 Frontier 4.0 and I put an intercooled S.C. on it. I wanted to use my cold air intake, so I just trimmed down the piece of intake tube that the S.C. came with. I'm assuming that the TRD one is very similar if not the same. Here is a pic after install.


I cut it down right where the coupler for the Cold air intake connects. Right by were it says Nismo on the tube.

 

I'm not sayin it can't be done, I'm just sayin I wouldn't do it with TRD stuff. Thats some expensive parts, hence why I recommended a aftermarket CAI like a K&n.

I had to cut my K&n to fit my truck, because it was made for a newer tacoma or 4runner, with the MAF that gets screwed into the side of the intake tube. The T100 and the 95-99? Tacoma's and 4Runners used a seberate, self contained MAF and tube. I cut the piece off that had the hole for the newer MAF and used a spectre silicone cupler to connect it to my MAF. Its worked fine for 2 years so I'm happy. Here's a pic.



I made the cut right before the K&n symbol.

-EDIT- KRAKR, How do you like your supercharged Nissan? What year is it? I don't know why, but they seem completely gutless up here at our altitude. I had some little punk kid pull up next to me in a S/C Frontier (not sure of the year) and the exhaust musta prevoked him, cause he started messin with me. Next light, I ran him to the speed limit (45) and had him by about a truck and a half, and I'm n/a still...
