I have an 87 pickup, v6 5 speed. I need to replace the ring and pinion in my front diff ( ifs) will the diff from a 1990 truck work? is the ratio the same? What is my stock ratio? would it be a good idea to go lower in both front and rear to get a little more power?

 

It may have the same ratio, but you need to check first. There is a sticker on the doorjamb or a plate near the firewall under the hood that willhave a code.

i was talking to a guy this morning my code is g292. he said he thinks its 4.10 gears. I ended up buying the parts this morning, i got a complete rear axle and front diff assy. i figure is its not the same gears i will swap them both. They cam w from a 4 cyl, i would think a 4 cyl would have lower gears?? if so thats just what i want, as long as they arent higher ill be happy.

 

You have an 88, not an 87. No V6 option in 87.

That said, just match ratios. If your ratio is currently 4.10, make sure the diff from the 90 truck is a 4.10 as well. As long as the 1990 has manual hubs, if will be the exact same front diff as your 87(88)

The rear from the 1990 will be a 4cyl diff tho, so different diff. It will still work, but you'll have a weaker pinion gear.

 

both ring and pinions stock should be 410s so it will work your truck could be an 87 and 1/2 thats what my 4runner is and it has a 3.0v6

 

It may be an 88, i cant remember right now, ill have to go check the vin, regardless, im sure it doesnt matter. lol. i know its def not 89, cuz its the old body style. Anyways, i picked up a complete rear axle, and complete front diff for a buck and a half today, it looks identical on the outside, hopefully the same applies on the inside. How hard is it to pull out the front diff? it doesnt look too bad, but looks can be deceiving, no?
