Steering box question

Last week a buddy and I re- sealed the steering/ gear/ ifs box in my 87 4Runner. Now i can't set idle to spec without the engine stalling and running weak. The engine runs fine off idle and I have idle set to 1000rpm to compensate.

It didn't do this before the overhaul to the box. Could the ps system be causing this issue somehow? do toyotas use different sized balls on the recirculating ball system?

Red face

Is it possible while doing this work you bumped or knocked something off that is effecting your idle??

How does it idle with the power steering belt removed??

Just what did you really do??

Just new seals or a complete rebuild on the bench??

We replaced the pump with a reman, replaced all the hoses and replaced all the seals/Teflon rings on the box except the piston's o-ring and Teflon ring. While it's possible that we bumped something, I think it's unlikely. All the efi business is on the other side of the engine bay.

I'll have to check the boots on the intake for cracks. Thanks for the idea of removing the belt to take any potential load off. It's finals week lol

My 88 22RE had a pressure sensor on the pump with 2 vacuum hoses to the intake. When you turn the steering at idle, it sensed the load and idled up the engine to compensate. Similar to idling up with the A/C.

Do you have the correct pump? Maybe the pressure is now too high. Enough to load down the engine?

Take off the belt as suggested and see if the problem goes away.
