Angry starting problem

ok i have an 86 4runner 22r-e 5 spd. just did the head gasket one it. it didnt run when i got it. when i try and start it it will pop like its going to go then nothing. shut the key off and try again some times it will pop again. then u can sit there and crank and crank and it wont do anything. if u get starting fluid you can get it to run but as soon as u hit the gas it back fires and shuts of. it doesnt seem to be missing when u get it to start. but it wont stay running any ideas? any help would be great.

Sorry, distributor. You got to have them on the exact tooth or they just don't run right at all. Took us about 20 tries the other night.

Make sure to hold your mouth right when you do it.

ok so the timeing is 100% good. i can sit there and slowly poor gas down the intake and it runs great and stays runing as long as i do that. no misfire or anything. so its def fuel. im thinking maybe a pluged fuel filter? the truck has been siting for 2 years and had alot of nasty crap in the gas tank so i cleaned all that out and put fresh gas in it. now i do have fuel at the injectors but im thinking maybe the fuel filter isnt pluged enuf to stop the gas from geing there but is pluged enugh to keep in from geting the volume it needs at the injecttors. its driving me crazy and its geting late. anyone got anyother ideas? the injecters are not pulged. any ideas are help. thanks so much
