As someone else mentioned, autozone compressors for $50 are well worth it, even if only used once...they used to loan tools, I dont think so anymore.

I cringe just thinking about that block of wood splintering and releasing into my face...ow. Please dont do it!

ok to put an end to this thread. I took every ones warning/advice and ended up renting one of the spring compressors for a $50 deposit yesterday. I wasn't able to screw it down enough to loosen the top nut. Its hard to hold that spring assembly while torquing those screws down.

SO when all else fails you take it to your buddys shop who happens to have a wall mount compressor which easily took care of it. Now I'm out a case of beer the next time I visit him but at least its done.

BTW I doubt that block of wood would splinter. That block of wood is only supporting the UCA/hub/rotor/caliper. There is no spring pressure or weight of the truck on it. Either way I agree with being safe. I only raised this question because it seemed like it would work.

Glad it all worked out.

I doubt the block of wood would splinter either, but when threads like these come up all I can think of is a kid (or adult) who reads this and doesn't take the proper precautions and gets seriously injured.
