Speedo gear stripped.

ok I bought the truck with a broken speedo and well no big deal its a manual. so its easy to gauge speed have had it like a year plus and no speedo no ticket. anyways I tryed fixing it once pulled the gear from the transfer case and the plastic gear was scredded in the middle. so I popped a new one in from the junk yard got it for free.. marine discount lol anyways I was in a hurry and tapped it in with a hammer and never drained the gear oil so it probly had some plastic before hand from the old one jammin up the gears... it stripped out after like 5 min. my question is Any thing I should know or do when putting these in I put gear grease on it... IM going to drain the transfer case and put new oil in it should the case be in netual? im takeing my time with this one so any suggestions or tips are helpfull. the cable spins freely put lithium grease from a sprey can down it too.

not sure what year your truck is, might want to post that up in your signature so it give people an idea so they can point you in the right direction...

anyway here is a link to some online factory service manuals: Toyota Service Manuals

If you don't get it fixed, a GPS works too...that is what I use in my '81

You need to make sure the cable moves free and the speedo head is nor bound up. Any resistance to the cable rotating puts stress on the tiny nylon gear teeth and they shred.

Usually it is a bound up cable, but I have seen speedo's sieze.
