Something went horrably wrong....
So I own 2 yotas an 81 i recently bought and an 82 i've had. One of the tires on the 82 were slashed (35" tires) so I decided to put the wheels off the new truck onto the old. A simple job that has become a bit of a nightmare. I no longer have access to a lift so I raised the front and rear ends by the axles with the wheels blocked. Once all the wheels were on, I started the truck and it would bairly move forward or back. Its like something is dragging and theres a loud metal grinding sound. There is no rear brakes (there hollow) and I've already checked and nothing on the wheels is stopping it. With the truck in the air the wheels move back and forth with no problem.
Any ideas????

check your backspacing. you probably just barely have enough clearance for the wheels to move while in the air. then when on the ground the play in your steering system allows stuff to rub.
I had a s10 blazer that i put new wheels and tires on that i couldn't put it into reverse until i added wheel spacers. it was fine going forward but as soon as i put it in reverse it would grind like mad.

Checked Tires...
No rubbing at all on either tire. Looked at the underbelly and I cannot see any damage beyond my offroad adventures. As I stated the truck moved before I put the new wheels on. I am not sure how but maby the rears in both trucks differ. The 81 drove fine with these wheels and tires on it and now the '82 wont. ?
Since the slashed tires are of no use, I am not going to bother putting them back on. So I am going to try the stock wheels and tires. There in storage and I will go and get them shortly (g/f upset that I will be using here Acura to pickup some dirty old tires). I just hope that they will hold air, lol (4 years in there).
I will move the tires around again this time with the stock wheels and tires. I will give an update as soon as I do.
P.S Tires enjoy the feeling of leather. lol.

Take the rims off and see where they are grinding. Check the backside me the rims and the front calipers for marks.
If it is making a grinding racket you should be able to find the after effects easily with the rims off.

Partial Update...
G/F is PISSED. hahahahaha, I had no idea how dirty these things were... haha. Maby I should have grabbed some trash bags to put them in, should have being the key. To late now... I gave her some money to detail her car so she'd get off my back...
Alright enough about my good laugh for the day...
OK. so the back wheels came off and the stock wheels went on. Theres no scaring of any kind of either rims or tires I took off. Theres no scaring on anything the wheel sits against or surrounding. So I went ahead and put the stock wheels on (Fully inflated). Put the truck down and Tried it. No Luck : ( Still doing the same thing.....
I put the truck back up and put the spacers I had on with the other rims along with the stock rims. Problem continues....
So now I am going to get the spacers out of the rear and attend the front end. The '81 (the other truck) had no spacers in the front. So I am going to use the spacers that came off the rear up front for my first attempt. If it works, I will try without the spacers.
Will post update soon! Thanks so much for the help. You guys out outstanding!!! I wish I knew about you guys when I battled to do everything I did to my truck ('82).
I will post some pics this afternoon!!

Stock wheels went on the front and had no need for spacers. I have compared both trucks over the last few hours and I see no differences. But some how the new truck ('81) can use these rims it came with but the '82 cant.... I called the lady I bought it from and she told me she put the rims on it. They came off a land cruiser and she had no problems with them. She put spacers in the back after a suggestion she was given so the rear end wouldn't "hop" around turns..... She told me everything else is stock....
I am looking up part numbers now to see if the brake parts changed in the 2 years. Thats about the only way I can solve the mystery. Unless I decided to move everything over (not in this heat)...
The spacers did not work in solving the problem, I will have to wait to get my check to get the 2" ones for sale. I drove the truck around a bit and 3 tires have slow leaks. Sooo..... I decided to fireball the rear tires in the middle of early rush hour traffic... It was one huuuuuuuuuge cloud of smoke.. lolol. Shows how much lighter my truck is without the 35" tires. lol.
I am waiting for a buddy to come by and pick the truck up. He is going to weigh the truck and compare it to when the 35's were first put on it! I will post my results along with the pics!
Thanks again guys.

I thought I would also post weight difference from going back to stock rims/ tires:
35x12.50R15 Tires mounted to
Steel American Racing Outlaw Wheels: 3340 LBS
Stock Wheels and tires: 3200 LBS
Difference of: 140 LBS
A bigger of a difference then I had originally thought.

i put the wheels off my 98 4runner on my pickup and they rubbed on the tie rod end, totally destroyed the inner part of the rim would not move at all i had to put in 4lo and ended up messing up the rim. does it move with the 35's on it.

Things..
Well it has done good with the 35's on it for the last 2 years. Torn up some trails, fields, and a few backyards. I get a kick out of the other guys when they see what my truck is capable of. You wouldn't believe me if I told you it could do 75mph with the 35's under it and the windows down. But it does. Its something no one believes until they have rod with me to see. Gas though is HORRIBLE. haha. I averaged about 5-12 MPG last time I check (a year ago or so).
I will have to check the tie rods cause I have a bit of a steering problem I've noticed a whole lot more with the stock wheels and tires now on it. I think its time for ball joints but the tie rods may also be causing some of the problem. I have been looking around to see what aftermarket stuff I can get that would be better then OEM. I am looking towards rebuilding the whole front end. I just have some overheating problems at the moment....
I took my truck out for a long drive out on some back roads yesterday/ today. Actually to take some things to the dump and well I realized a whole world of problems I am having....
Steering:
- Steering is all messed up. Steering wheel does a full 3/4 turn both ways without moving the truck then a 1/4" beyond that throws the truck to the side. The nut on the middle of the steering wheel was loose and when I went to tighten it it just goes around in circles. It tightens a little then beyond that its loose again.....
Overheating
- Truck reached 210 degrees F and I decided to shut her down. This was in town going slow and stopping a lights. I have put 2 thermostats (The 2nd in case of faulty 1st one). All new hoses, and even the radiator from the other truck. I tested the electric fan and its spinning at the speed it should. Now today I noticed a squeaking, clicking sound. I suspected it was air trapped but I got all the air out and it continued. I even replaced the pressure release radiator cap with a brand new one. Still nothing. I suspect its the head gasket but I show no smoke, now oil in the radiator fluid, nothing... I should also mention that the heat coming out from under the floor is so hot it burns my feet (no joke) if I wear sandals. Turning the heater on or off doesn't help but when it is hot the heater control on the dash needs some forcing to get it to move. The guy next door told me Its my water pump but he's also the guy who's car has more problems then any of my ex girlfriends.
Misc:
I have one brake light and no other light works. I keep popping fuses so somethings shorting. I may just get a new wire harness cause It would use one. Any for sale??
My CD player skips when I'm offroad. LOLOLOL. I actually found a cd player that also takes usb memory cards so I have a anti skip/ changing the cd solution. : ) Local radio stations suck on trails. 20 crappy songs, one good one and 2 hours of ads for junk I have no interest in... Let the music be loud and uninterrupted!!

I had a similar problem when I put a set of wheels from my old '84 on my '97 taco. It was the difference in offet that cause the wheels to bind on the front caliper.
Try jacking your truck up and rotate the tires manually. Though is sounds like you need to do a thorough inspection of your truck before you drive it. Good luck with the Gremlins...

Thinking...
Not sure at the moment what I will do. I have parked the truck for the mean time. I have the other truck to worry about 2. In the end they will become one. (The frame on my old truck is moving over.) I am thinking maby I should hold off and put my money into the other truck. But I would need this truck If I were to need to go pickup parts or another parts truck.... Hummm.. I have some thinking to do.
