Self muffler installation question

I went to 3 muffler shops to get a muffler installed and 2 said they couldn't reuse the old pipe for bs reasons and 1 was expensive as hell so I'm going to put it in my damn self and I'm going to clamp it till I have enough money to replace my welder that got stolen.
In order to slide the muffler over the 2.25" pipe and clamp it, do i need a 2.25 or 2.5" muffler?

i don't know? but what i do is cut, with a sawzall, a 1 inch sample of the pipe and then take it to the autoparts store and match it up to the muffler! mike

p.s. there is i.d. (inside diameter) and o.d. (outside diameter) pipe so there is 2.25 id and 2.25 od etc...

I bet if you were to buy the muffler from the shops they would have installed it with the stock pipes with no problem...

And X2 on cutting/taking the pipe with you.

lots of times you cant get a good weld on a rusty pipe. That could be the reason for replacment.
