Removing steering linkage from steering box

I have a '91 Toyota Pickup 4WD V6...

I'm gonna replace my power steering box real soon, it's been leaking, and I'm thinking of going to the junk yard to get one.

My question is on the FSM. It says, to remove the universal joint from the steering box, you loosen the column side set bolt, and remove the gear side set bolt.

What does this mean? Can anyone elaborate?

i dont know how much i can help you considering i've only done one very recently, but i can at least tell you that on my 86 4runner there are a few things to dissconnect. the first is the actually steering column from the box which is connected via a ujoint by the steering box. the ujoint slips onto a splined shaft coming out of the box, so unbolt the small bolt and slide the shaft (and u joint) back towards the firewall. next is the main mounting bolts which on my runner there are three of. they are all 17mm i believe and they go from side to side through the frame. finally you have to disconnect the pitman arm from the box which you need to get a pitman arm puller from autozone or somewhere and pop that off. hope this helps.

Assuming you are referring to the shaft attaching to the box, there is a clamp at the bottom end. Loosen AND REMOVE the clamp bolt there and see if you can pull the shaft off the end of the box input shaft. You need to remove the clamp bolt first as it rides in a groove behind the splines on the input shaft.

May also need to loosen the upper clamp (at the firewall) in order to slide the shaft up farther to clear the box input shaft.
