Regearing question

Is it possible to see if previous owner installed different gear ratio into truck? Ok, bought the 90' v6 pickup. The guy didn't say if anything was improved on truck, just that it wouldn't start. got it working. After getting it working and speedo working I noticed it was running 3 mph faster on speedo then actually was, (tested with radar) with stock size tires. After putting on 33x12.5r15 on the truck it is now running at normal mph that the radar is saying.

stock gears on the truck are- G294 = 8" 4.10 open diff.

But, I have yet to see mpg drop, nor have i lost any powa going up hills, if anything I have more of a powa range now. I used to have to down shift with the smaller tires, now I don't.

Have you tried the "raise the truck and spin the tire" test? Mark your flange on the diff (painters tape?), and mark one tire's outer edge. Raise one side of the truck while blocking the wheels on the ground. Rotate by hand (in neutral!) the raised tire with tape and count the number of times the flange rotates 360* for ONE 360* rotation of the tire. Divide the number to get the (rough) gear ratio.

So, just over 4 rotations would be a 4.10 ratio....almost 5 would be 4.88, etc.

it's crude, but quick and easy

i know what gears i should go with, i dont know if the previous owner had already regeared truck to 4.56 or 4.88. he never mentioned any modifications he did to the truck, just what was wrong with it.

thanks though.

and if the lifted wheel doesn't spin while in Neutral I would suspect that it has a locker of some sort as well?

I wouldn't even know how to check for if it is LSD.
from my knowledge they didn't put any indicators in the gearing nomenclature about that.

If your that picky your going to HATE your truck as there will always be things that arn't "quite right" on a 22 yo truck. Speedos are NEVER accurate. I did the same test to my parents new car last year and it was out about the same. 3mph accuracy is pretty good. Lets be honest, we don't use a speedo. we just go the same speed as the rest of traffic anyways.

lol, im not that picky. I was just that observant about the speedo cause I installed the speedo cable housing, which was a pain in the rear. but, if it is +-3mph I could care less. just realized that it is spot on now that I have 33's on instead of stock.
