Rear third member interchange

I have a 1993 toyota 4x4 with 3.0 auto, the rear diff is shot. It has 4.56 gears, code G254, 8" ring gear, 4.56 ratio, 4 pinion carrier. I have found a 1996 toyota 4 runner, 4x4, auto with 3.4 with rear diff code A04A, 4.56 gears, 2 pinion. Can I intall the 4 runner third member into 1993, i guess would they be interchangeable???

Yes you can interchange them if they are both indeed 4.56s'.

This page says there are no 2 pinion 3rds in '96+ 4Runner, all are supposed to be 4 pinon types like the earlier 'V-6 3rds.

This thread says A04A is 4.30

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/axle-codes-54515/

Other sources indicate 'A code is 7.5" ring gear???

I don't know what to think.........

Here is another page that makes it even more confusing, Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the info, the G254 came off the 93, auto 3.0 and the code A04A is from the 96 4 runner, 3,4 auto. Maybe the codes don't match the 3rd member??? I guess the only way to tell for sure is to pull it out and compare visually. Chart I found for A04A is A: 7.5 ring gear, 04 4.56 ratio and A for 2 pinion. Would like to verify before doing the work. Any input will be greatly appreciated. I think they should interchange but I can't find a straight answer. Maybe I'll pull up web site to order rebuilt 3rd member for both and see what I get for the truck info

I pulled up East Coast Gear Supply and it lists 85-95 V6 Toyota pickup and 4 runners and 96-2009 4 runners without Elocker together as using the same 3rd member. I may call them tomorrow and maybe they will be kind and help me out.

I can say for certain that no '96 4Runner came from the factory with a 7.5" Rear end.

FRONT axle in 3rd gen Runners is 7.5" high pinion clamshell case type and requires reverse cut gears that are not suitable for ANY 7.5" rear 3rd member.
