rear diff help
#1
OK, I have a 95 4runner...the rear diff is tearing itself apart....
sooooo
it is the factory 4.88 unique to the 95's....
If i get another rear, and the gearing is not the same, do I also have to regear the front.....(I don't hardly ever use the 4WD)
It is hard finding the 4.88's, and they are expensive.....
Any help would be great
thanx,
Chad

The rear end is wailing pretty bad, the guy I took it too said the bearings are falling to pieces....I was just going to buy a chunk, and replace it....but I can only find complete rear axles (2) fairly close, and they want around $ 700 for them each......
Seems kinda pricey to me for a used axle.....But, I don't really know, this is my first time looking for one other than a Chevy rear end.......
but hey, thats what this board is for, info for people like me who really don't know too much...
Thanks for the help....

I meant to say the carrier will only hold the 4.88 factory gears for that year......you can't swap other stuff into it....at least thats what I read......

Yes, the factory 4.88 carrier and gears are somewhat unique, but any pickup or 4Runner ('95 or earlier) will have those gears. Another option is to get a non-4.88 3rd and have a set of aftermarket 4.88s installed.
