Rear axle

i drive a 1984 pickup 4x4 im rebuilding fully im putting in a chevy v8 305 or 350 if i bore it out but i still have my stock 4 cylinder rear end and transmission i want to replace the transmission with an automatic one and want to get a bigger rear end to hold up to the new motor what other trucks tranmission/rear axle can go under the truck and work ive been told that an axle/transmission from a jeep or chevy s10 would work is this true if not what could i get to swap it with thanks for the replies

If you want auto trans keep it GM. Like a TH400, TH350 etc etc. IMO the gear driven Toyota t-cases are pretty stout. Hopefully someone can confirm that. However, might be cheaper to just match a GM case to the trans. As the advance adapter adapters can be a bit pricey.

Don't know much about the axles but if it were me I'd be going with a dana60s and wouldn't look back. Question is width wise what would work. Either way, better know how to weld. Because nothing is going to be a bolt on swap other then the engine stuff.

toyota rear isnt the problem its the front axle and birfields not to ment front driveline angles but dont worry about your stock rear axle in less your pushing over 400 horses

350 small block, TH400, Atlas 4, Dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear ARB lockers f/r, 40's.

^^True, that would be sweet, but also expensive.

I think youll be fine with the stock rear end. They are pretty durable.

But if you want to beef up that axle get a v6 3rd with a detroit or an arb and some Chromo shafts, and forget its back there.
