yes it can, the 22R and the 22RE use the exact same block.

Two major things needing swapped are the knock sensor, and the pump pump block off plate.

Other than that, its pretty self explanitory.

damn thats quick. i kept the wiring harness in my truck but put a 22r in it (it was cheaper at the time). i've got an "re" with a rod hanging out the side, i can take the intake off that and put it on my 87 r? any complications with doing this?

everything is the same as long as you have the lasser block. your head should be the same as well. i am doing the swap right now and not haveing any issues other than i had to find a replacement oil pan due to my 22r coming out of a 2wd truck.

Yes, Youve got the idea, It's really not a hard swap, granted you somewhat know your general mechanics, like it sorta seems you do. Like DeathCoug said, The knock sensor and pump block off plate are the 2 things not to forget aboot.

as long as you have the square port 22r head you can use it. if its the round port your efi intake will not work so you will need to swap heads. but if you pulled the 22r out of an 87 toy you should be fine.

yes it's an 87 engine, and pretty sure it's square port. i had the head rebuilt before i put the motor in, with all the goodies, so i would really like to be able to use it.

yup you should be good to go then. another thing i also thought of is the brackets on the bottom sides of the engine that the trans bolts to you might need to swap. mine was from a 2wd auto and the brackets didnt have threads as the 2wd autos have the threads in the trans unlike the 4wd 5spd. you can just swap the brackets or get longer bolts and through bolt them. i through bolted cause my old brackets were toast after the rod busting out the side of the block and breaking them in pieces. just make sure you use grade 8 or better.

i'll check on that, but what do those have to do with swapping an intake? i know what brackets your're talking about though. i've got the block off plate off the bad engine, but not sure on the knock sensor. where's that located at? i'm just glad i kept all my wiring harness in tack and tucked away. i'm using my factory fuel tank i just relocated it behind the cab (no bed) and unhooked the fuel pump, kept that wiring too! so from all the info i've gathered so far i think i should be in good shape. but if i run into any problems or questions i think i got some fellow yota-ers that can steer me in the right direction! thanks again guys

the knock sensor sits just above the oil sending unit under the intake. there should be a threaded hole all ready in the block.

i was thinking you were swaping a 22r into a 22re truck and just adding the 22re intake. but now that i look i see you are running a 91 with a 22r motor. so no need to worry about the brackets.

yeah, i've got a bad ass 22r but now i've got access to a "re" top end. and if i could use the intke and such to make it fuel injected it would be even more "bad asser". i check into the knock sensor and get it straightened out. thanks mud crasher
