Possible first Toyota purchase
Howdy all, I'm eyeing an 84 4Runner. The engine is in need of a rebuild. Somehow, the engine was ran until drained of its lifeblood and therefore threw a rod. The body is fair, rust in the front passenger fender well- not real sure of anywhere else because I've yet to physically see it other than a few photos. It did however recently pass the Virginia state inspection, that is saying something as Virginia is one of the more strict states regarding inspections. That gives me some reassurance that the chassis is not rusted, or rotted. According to the owner the floor pans have spots of surface rust but again I've yet to see for myself. The owner also states that everything works as it should other than the engine. I'm looking for an older rig like this to have a little fun in, take off the top when the weathers nice and what not. I don't need it to be stylish, just functional. The asking price is $850.00. That seems very fair considering I've seen others for a bit more. I know the engine rebuild will cost a bit, that doesn't bother me, just don't want any surprises. Anyhow, what do you fellas think? Any advice? Thanks for your time.

If I had access to it, I would snatch it up. Just for the front diff and an extra t-case, if nothing else.
Check the floorboards under the carpet, in the area where it starts to ramp up. I see a lot of folks have problems with leaves and such getting into the drain that's in the rear of the front fender well and A-pillar if there's a sunroof. But since the trash accumulates at the bottom, that's where the rust starts.
And check entire length of frame and cross members. And where the body mounts to the frame.
Posting a few pics could help us notice some things that you might miss.

The thing about a vehicle with a bad engine that was run low on oil till a rod bearing spun.
Just what is the rest of the drive train like??
As long as you know going in this could become a major project $$$$$ go for it.
This being your first Toyota I think I would lean more towards one that can be driven.
The price for a parts truck is a little high .Depending just how bad you might need things
It all comes down to how much work and how much money is in the budget.

Agreed, and that remains to be seen. I'm going to check it out this evening, I'll start it albeit the bad engine, drive around a little, engage 4X4 hi and lo. I know going in not to except much. I don't mind rebuilding a few necessary components but just for a fun off road beater, top off drive in the appropriate weather I don't want to invest $$$$ into a bottomless pit. Thanks for your help.
