perfect 85 runner setup?

if you cant find a parking spot?mother law in town?son wants to buy a chevy? 3.4 swap
Before you do anything else and spend more time and money on it, why don't you make a few loooong road trips in it (especially up mountain passes). Then, take the rest of your budget and do a 3.4 swap instead or sell it and buy a 3rd gen. Whatever you do, do not take a 3rd gen for a test drive or put more weight on your rig, ie: armor or worse yet, get bigger tires. 35's? lmao. Ya, my '85 came with them and I could not get rid of them fast enough. Its funny b/c with that motor you want this rig to be as light as possible yet for what you need it has to be weighted down with a bunch of crap. Not peeing on your parade, just saying. Make a few trips with it first where you have to cruise 75/80mph for a few hours (especially up hills).

.I am or was just like you and this is the place to go. Three months ago i purchased a 85 4runner w/60k original miles original owner, a retired school teacher, non smoker, garaged since new.
It now sports new wheels, 33 x 12.5 hancook mud tire, exact same as our ICE or border patrol use here in the desert southwest, and 4inch lift.
I'll be posting before and after photos soon.
I can't tell how valuable this site was for me.
Thanks to everybody

well i just placed the order for a Warn 9.0RC winch and 5- 15x8 Pro Comp 52s...as soon as the lockers are available i will have them on order, when i get home i will be driving to discount tire to pick up the 33x10.50R15 KM2s, and then its on to the lift...

just ordered the first of two ARB's...$1440 to the door for both brand new lockers, air compressor, and install kit. cant beat that. i wish i could give some details on how i managed to get that deal, but was asked not to.
I know you all are probably getting tired of hearing about things that i have (or plan to have) on order, but it is the best i can do while here in Afghanistan...

Marlin or AllPro... But I'd look for a Q78 wich is supposed to be @ 10" wide...
I hate 35/12.50's... You don't need them, they have a ton of drag and weight, and IMO the wider the contact patch, the more it will break parts...
Sad part is there are few tire in that size... I contacted BFG about making a 35/10.50 you can to if you want...
And stay away from the Super Swamper 35/10.50 SSR. It has a very weak sidewall.

Sounds like most of your miles with this truck will be on pavement or gravel roads etc. For this reason, I would limit your tire size to no more than 33s. I'd probably recommend less and run 31s for an expedition. If you plan to truly drive this thing on an expedition, a smaller tire size will also wear less on your drivetrain etc. and you will see much better mpg. Perhaps this is the obivious, but its tempting to go bigger, when what you need is smaller.
Someone posted that an A/T tire might be a good choice. I'd have to agree here. You can get some decent performance on and offroad without destroying mileage. Some of these tires now have excellent mileage ratings and reviews to prove.
In my opinion, completeing serious modifications to an expedition vehicle is dicey. Unless well thoughtout, planned and expertly installed, you might be setting yourself up for vehicle failure in a really bad spot. I wouldnt want to have to find some specialty component down in the middle of nowhere south america.
Just my $0.02 worth. Happy Travels.

you make a lot of really good points. i have pretty much decided on a set of 5 33x10.50 KM2's...i figured the 33 would give me a little better ground clearance, while the 10.50 width would not change my contact patch from what i have now and i am getting pretty good mileage for the 22RE. i am looking toward the KM2's because all the reviews and first hand accounts i have heard on them say they have ride quality and noise levels of an AT. being that they are smooth and quiet on the road, i am assuming that they are rather conservative on fuel...thoughts?

All this expedition talk got me on the comp downloading an old camel trophy video... I think the KM2s would be a good choice. There is a lot of opinions on tires out there. I don't have first hand experience with that tire, but I bet its a hellof lot better mileage wise than the older ones... Anyone? A couple things you may also wish to consider - not vehicle mods, just things to take:
- wheel lug locks, you could wake up somewhere to an ugly surprise...
- filter for gas..

i was perusing the internet (lcengineering) yesterday and ran across fuel filter replacements and decided that would be a good idea. i have also decided that on the 1st of Feb i will be purchasing a 140 amp alternator, lcengineering header, ignition tune-up kit, fuel filter, and R&P install kits for both diffs. then on the 15th, i plan on purchasing the other ARB locker, and the actual R&P gears. first of March will be a lcengineering pro torquer cam and rocker arm assy. 15th of the month i will be purchasing tires. any ideas on how i should set up my interior?
oh, and by the way, i PROMISE this will look more like a build thread when i get home and have some parts to install. thanks for all the patience...
