Parking Brake Indicator Light

I'm new here and after using the search tools I will post a question that I'm sure has been answered before. I just can't find it.

I have just purchased a '96 Tacoma 2.7L 4X4 and the parking brake indicator light keeps coming on even when the handle is held all the way in. My brother has the same problem with his 2000 Tacoma. Is the problem in the switch? Or is there something else causing this distraction?

By the way my brother and I grew up in Tacoma, WA. He still lives there and I visit him often.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Gene Brown
Hillsboro, OR

it could be the switch. when it happens, play around with the ebrake a little, making sure to hit the switch and see what happens. you should be able to tell if its the switch. you might want to try checking the switch anyway to make sure its seated tightly and all. do your regular brakes feel fine?

If it's not the switch then check the brake fluid level and make sure it's up to the MAX line indicator. If the fluid is low then it could also mean that your brake pads/shoes may need some maintenance.

2nd vote for brake fluid level. The light is tied into All Things Brake related (short of the ABS)... the fluid level is the most common.
