bad, can be fixed you didnt say broken past repair... i would go have a second opinion.. thats just me..
listen up... if you pay a few dollars for a new engine and transmission right off the shelf, still does not compare to the overwheliming prices the dealerships want for new/used cars and trucks..
you need to man up and repair your truck like its you only means of transportation...
"just like how you used to ride mopeds when you were 14 yrs old cuz you could go pickup fat chics".

you are just going to give up on it? even if u sell it and buy something new, you are going to spend more money? its funny i go to the toyota dealer and park my truck next to a brand new 2010 tacoma and you just cant compare them. not only does the 20 year old truck look better imo but it is way better made and its actually made in japan :O iv had people looking at my truck while in the dealer parking lot while there is like 40 tacoma's around it lmao. if it was me i would fix the engine and continue to drive it, because you will never find a better truck than what was made back then.

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
Just wanted to get back with everyone who replied to my original post and thank you for your time and knowledge. I took the truck to a reputable mechanic here and had him look at it. He pulled the head and found that I had a bad block. SOOO looks like I will have to part it out.. Can't find a motor anywhere for a decent price and I have over 300 thousand miles on the truck so I really don't want to put a lot of money into it. It was a great truck and I hate to have to give it up but the time has come! Again thanks for all your responses.
Wow, you can't find a block for it, it's too old to put that kind of money in, but you're gonna part it out?
GL, and I'm glad I aint buying any parts from ya...
I'm with you. Cars should never break down, cost money to fix, and should always be an investment

I bought the truck new 15 years ago and I've never run straight water. Always 50/50. It has had a bad heater core for a while and I think that might be where the rust build up has developed from. I hate to think that it's a HG blown but am beginning to believe it is. One last thing I was going to do was pull the engine coolant plug and drain from there but I can't for the life of me locate it. I have a chilton manual but it isn't where the manual says it is.
Thanks again for ALL responses! I really appreciate all of them!

another mistake people make is using tap water, USE DISTILLED... along with anti-freeze. tap leads to rust and blocked passages

Something else that I didnt see mentioned on here is flushing with a garden hose just doesnt goet all of the rust out. Every 15+year old radiator I have had flushed with a high pressure by my local radiator shop as been shocking. The shop I use charges $25 to flush and usually has to fix a weld or two and charges another $10 for that. My truck the temp guage dropped down 25%. I have to pull it and take it to him but that is easy, I pull the heater core hoses and flush them with a garden hose going both ways. I know the original post ended with a headed gasket, but hope this helps other. If you get to watch them flush your radiator you will be quite surprised.
