Oil pump install - priming practices.

Hey all, continuing to work on my first engine rebuild. I have an '86 22re that I'm about to put a new Aisin oil on to. After doing a bunch of research, I'm still unclear about how to prime (or even if I should prime) the oil pump upon installation.

So how are people priming pumps on newly rebuilt 22re's? Some options I've read about...

- Regular motor oil (just putting some on the gears as per Haynes manual)
- Break-in type motor oil
- Assembly lube (not sure what kind or brand?)
- Gear grease
- Axle grease
- Vaseline (see this post for a disucssion on that)
- Something not listed here?

If you're advice is to use assembly or grease, how much do you recommend using? Does it have to be fully packed like this, or is that actually too much?

Any advice / experiences are greatly appreciated!

Vaseline works good, Motor oil or gear oil will work as well.
If you don't the pump oil starves from cavitation since there is no oil to seal the internals to create a good enough vacuum to draw the oil from the pan.

You don't have to super pack it like that but it doesn't hurt it., Just that all surfaces are grease or oiled up.
