Its a real newbie question, but i have always woundered, is it normal that the sound coming from "somewhere between the eng. and the trans." is higher then the engieen? Its lika a high pitched sound, strongest in the lower gears. I have always thought that it is kind of sad because the idle of the engieen is soo lovely, than when you begin to drive, that noise takes over...
It also makes you wanne shift at 2000rpm, spec in the 1 gear...
What is it and is there something I can do to hear it less?

Sounds like maybe your trans is going. When is the last time you changed the oil in the trans? Is it a 5 speed or Auto? Does it do it in 4wd? If everything is working good sounds like your pretty much stuck with the noise till it falls apart.

 

Oh, sorry, its a 5 speed. I changed the oil 1 years ago, but nothing changed. I have had this sound since i bought the truck (5 years ago), but I have always assumed that it was normal...
Yes, it does it in 4wd to, the sound is even more intense in 4L.
Its only there when you press the acc.pedel down, so idling forward in the 1st gear is ok...
Also, the sound is much more dull in the 4th and 5th gear ( sounds less).

Transfer case is eating itself maybe?

 

i hear this same sound from my 82 4x4 pickup.... kind of a whistling noise. i think its an intake/exhaust leak of some sort but havent poked around yet. keep me posted, ill let you know what i find too.

 

I think you have an aged clutch assembly. Lots of harden parts in there they get dry over time. May be the release bearing has gone dry. Might be time to replace the clutch assembly.

I hear a swishing noise from my tranny(4spd std). Tranny shop said that it is normal noise of the internal gearing (synchros and the like) doing their thing. makes sense to me. They say usually there is more insulation on the floor and you don't normally hear it. stops in 4th because it is direct drive at that point.

 

had that problem once, it was the pilot and throwout bearing. They got low on grease then after time rusted and ate themselves apart. Getting out that pilot bearing on the back on the crank is a pita even when you use the grease&shaft way.

In my case, i dont think its an intake leak. Sounds more like transfer or maby clutch, but, can someone just confirme if this is normal or not?

Just some info to make it easier to say if i have a prob or not:

- Cant shift to first gear in high speed, you nearly have to stop to get it in.
- Transfercase: pretty hard to shift from 2H to 4H in speed
- As I said, the sound is strongest in first gear, but, its there all the time. Havent noticed if its gone in 4th, have to try that.
- belive its there if you change transfer to neutral, with 1st gear in, although it dissapears when tranny is in neutral.

Everything else is normal and good working. I would be very glad to hear that this sound is not normal, actually, cause I dont like it at all...

 

Nearly having to stop to get into first is normal, the trans has interlocks to keep you from accidently down shifting too early and causing damage. The transfer case is hard to shift while moving because it's not a shift on the fly case (if it's anything like earlier models anyway). It's meant to be shifted at a stop.

 

Oh, thanks. Concerning the transfer, the manuel says that it can be operated up to 80 km/h, so I guess its a shift-on-the-fly case...

 

yep it is, but i don't do it over 15 MPH, and I make sure all the wheels are spinning at that speed before i shift it. Thats only for 2HI to 4HI, anf back, not for 4LO.

 

Yes. But, do you have this sound?
I know that its hard to explane how it sounds, it dosent really sound like something that has broken, since i have had it for 5 years with no change...
Its best described as a whistling, coming from the back of the eng./front of the tranny that increases in fequence whith eng.rpm, spec. in the lower gears. in first gear, in oversounds the engieen.

Well, its the kinda whiney noise when you start to get up to speed in 4WD. Just about ever 4X4 vehicle I've ever heard/driven makes a similar sound, so it must be the transfer case, since it doesn't do it in 2WD.

 

Low range gears are straight cut. It's just gear whine like when a manual trans is in reverse.
