Holy cow, what were the symtoms leading up to that?
And how long did it take?

What were the first symtoms?

Ok so I just jacked up the truck, drivers side front to be exact, as that is were I herd the squel/squeeking, findings.....

12 and 6 oclock, pulling in and out...no play, and I did it enough to move the truck, so its a no play for that.

3 and 9 in and out....no play.

only way i felt about 1mm or so of play was if I just pushed IN at 12 oclock. then I felt a tiny tiny bit of play.

What do you guys think?

.
Honestly this could be the sound your idler arm will make when the bushing get worn out. Lay on your back directly under the idler arm. Grab the end of the arm and see if you can move it up and down.

Edit: This would have nothing to do with the squeaking though, but a worn out idler clangs over bumps and potholes like you wouldn't believe.

Whether there's play or not, if you have dirty grease (or lack of grease) in your bearings, that can lead to noise. I don't know how long you've had the vehicle, but I'm sure they're probably due to be repacked anyways, so you really have nothing to lose. Repack them and see if the problem goes away. While you're re-packing them, it will give you the chance to inspect them too. It will cost you $5-$10 for a tube of grease, and a few hours of time. As mentioned above, you will need a 54mm (or 2-1/8") socket, a torque wrench and a fish scale to re-adjust the preload on your bearings. Other than that, standard tools are all you need.

question for the pros - I'm doing front brakes and figured I'd replace the bearings while I'm at it. The old bearings and races look fine but I decided to slip in some new bearings with the existing races (which look unworn to me) is this a bad idea? I'm getting mixed opinions on this... please give me yours, all wise and knowledgeable Yoda Techs
Thansk!
