Noise coming from rear end?

At about 20 mph I hear a fairly loud whoomp whoomp whoomp sound coming from the rear on my '93. Almost sounds like a tire is rubbing on a certain spot but nothing is touching anywhere. U- joints seem to be ok. Any ideas?

I have a seemingly similar noise on mine for the moment!
I believe mine is simply the drum being warped slightly.
The right side shows signs of rubbing on the vehicle side of the drum "where it meets the shield" in two places directly
across from each other! and makes no noise with the drum removed!

Yours may be the same or a bearing or gear.

I would pull the rear end off the ground and see if you can narrow it down to one side or the other or ujoint or gears!

for the record I hope it is a simple and as cheap as toyotas' can be cheap Fix!

Seems to be coming from the drum. When I spin it by hand theres a certain point it kind of catches and sounds like its rubbing on something.

If I can figure out how to get the darn drum off Id know for sure.

My 96 has 2 holes in the drum itself for screws to push the drum off.

My bad axle bearing sounded kinda like that, but with a bit more of a rough sound to it.

X2

mine takes two bolts as well, you thread them in and use a ratchet to turn them alternatingly till it comes out past the shoes.

I do not think mine is bearings because it does not make the noise with the drum removed. Yours very well could be though.

Those holes were stripped out, both sides. I pounded on the drum until I was blue in the face, nothing.

Shop #1 cant get it off either but says the axle shaft is bent.

Shop #2 gets it off, confirms its a bent axle shaft.

How does an axle just bend?
