As a fairly new wheeler (had my truck for 1 year) I don't really know what everything means that's said on this forum.. Can someone be kind enough to get a list of what things mean.. Like wtf are 1-tons, 3rds, birfs etc? I've never heard of those words before..

 

3rds are the differentials, front and rear. birfs are birfields. they are the axle shafts in solid axle rigs. Solid axle meaning solid front axle from 79 to 85. they were in pick ups and for runners. Anything after 85 has IFS independent front suspension. except land cruisers. 1 tons can mean two things. could be refering to springs or axles from full size domestics trucks chevys fords dodge. this thread might be a good idea for a sticky in the newbie section.

 

He's from Australia, lucky bastard has a solid axle in a second gen...just kiddin. Most other brands don't have "3rds", you see toyota made ours so if we pull out the axle, the entire thing can be taken in out in one piece as opposed to say a ford where you would have a rear plate that opens for servicing which also makes the differential housing itself weaker.

I stand corrected, this though is the exception to the rule, unlike Toyota, did/do any Toyota trucks have non 3rd member rears?

Toyota did use some of the non-removable third style axles, but it was late 60's/early 70's
