Newbie question (Gears)
#1
Just getting my 1990 Toyota 4x4 pickup V6 fitted with a 4" Suspention and a 3" body lift. Going with 35x15.50x15 Super Swamper tsl sx's
I think I found a chart somewhere in here that said a 5.29 gear ratio would fit my application perfect. Does this sound right ? if so, Can I just as easy buy the ring and pinion (Youkon) on ebay. about $199.00 for one set ? Thanks for any input.

You would need to regear the front diff as well if you ever expect to put it into 4wd.
Go to www.gearinstalls.com read up on how he sets a ring and pinion. If you don't have access to all those tools it's not that easy.
5.29's will work. If you can't set the gears yourself and trying to go cheap, you can run factory 4.88's with your 35's without much trouble. BBP runs that setup, and still cruises just fine on the freeway as well as wheel some pretty good trails in 4lo
There is a gear calculator link in here. You can figure out what the rpm difference would be between 4.88's and 5.29's.

If your rig is an automatic, 5:29 may not be low enough. Only a small handfull of ppl can successfully setup 5:70 well enough to wheel or be reliable. The factory 4:88 were stock on auto's with 31".

Buy the rear ready to run from trail-gear... That way you can get the locker of your choice at the same time. No point in regearing without locking it. Then sell your old 3rd on CL or keep it as a trail spare.
