Newbie Off road

I got this 89' 4runner AWESOME truck in great shape and runs well. I put on 31X10.5 tires on it it came with some after market rims. I took the rig up to a 4x4 trail Caribou in Nederland colorado she ran well some of the steep stuff she could not climb. Would a KnN cold air filter help this???

Also what do you guys recomend would be the best modification on put on this rig it is my everyday driver too.

Please let me know...

When you say it wouldn't climb do you mean it didnt have the power or it was spinning?

If powers the problem I'd regear it. If spinning the issue I'd slap a locker in it..Do you have a 22RE or a V6 and auto or 5 spd?

Well K&N will give you a few more Hp but will let in some more dust. Like Bain said was it power, spinning, gutless. I have done a few trails that were pretty crazy and the biggest thing I have found is the spinning of the tires. So lockers is a huge helper. Gears will certainly help up here in Colorado, especially when you increase your tire size.

Hey guys it was most deFF POWER she almost comes to a complete stop then we had to turn back it was on the south side of Caribou about 2 miles from Eldora Ski area...

No spinning just weak power...

I got a 2.4 manual trans 4 cly 22re

What is the best bang for the buck modification...

I put a K&N air filter and was considering and intake but old air intake for off roading not sure if thats the best thing with water and all...

What do yall think?

Gearing is probably the best mod you can make to gain more power off roading. More HP isn't really that helpful when your crawling in low RPMs you need torque.

Get a locker. In the rear. 4low? Air down your tires? I have a stock 93 pickup with 31x10.5 bfg a/t and can climb some hills and stuff I never thought possible. Airing down helped bigtime!

Font waste your time with a cold air intake. Maybe a free flowing exaust flowmaster, magnaflow Borla etc

You can sometimes find the cheap 4runner rims that come with the spare tires at junk yards for like $5-10 each.

x3 for 4LOW. Caribou is practically a dirt road - your truck should have NO problem, even if it wasn't running optimally.

Don't waste your time on intake - Toyota actually does a pretty good job in that regard.

My other recommendation would be to check out a local 4WD club, like COTTORA to learn some more of the technique and etiquette of 'wheeling before you damage your truck or hurt yourself.
