newbie needs tech help?

just wanted to see what yall think.. im trying to get an 87 yota 22r has 110k on it.

basically it has a full total chaos LT kit front and rear.. headers. beard seats... full glass..

question is.
the guy said it wouldnt pass smog cuz the headers.?? is it possible other things could be wrong? its a stock exhaust other then the headers..
other thing
he said 1st gear pops out sometimes.. it it a bad cluth or tranny..

thanks ive been looking for a long time and for the price 2k doesnt seem to bad.. but would it be a good dd and fun offroad toy 25% of the time.?
im new to the 22r as well as toyota..

thanks

an 87 should have a 22re, fuel injected. passing "smog" varies by state. some have laws concerning headers to be used "for offroad only". you'll have to check your state laws. if he's saying it won't pass emissions because of the header, it may be cuz your state doesn't allow them. or he may have eliminated a cat or an 02 sensor when he modified the exhaust. you'd need to visually check for these items, and check the DIAGNOSIS terminal for the check engine codes. (do a search on YT or google for instructions to jump the pins in the diag terminal on the pass. side of the engine comp.

if you have no engine codes you should be able to pass emissions with a 22re.

as far as first gear popping out, it could be linkage issue, or it could be bad 1st gear syncro. if the truck really is decked out with total chaos, it might be worth $2k even if you have to drop a W56 tranny into it down the line. provided everything else is cool of course.
