New Carb, idle issues

Hi Friends,

Picked up an 83 4x4 pickup recently. Carb that came with is old and many parts stuck even after cleaning the best I could. Was having major problems with fast idle and idle in general. Had to crank way down on idle screw to keep it from dying. Bought a new carb on Amazon. Fast idle resolved but I'm still having to crank idle screw way in to keep it at maybe 1600 rpm. And even then it idles rough and does want to die.

I'm new to carbs. Like I said, brand new carb mounted so probably not carb. Dies immediately if idle screw is not screwed in almost all the way. (that's with spring removed) I think I have all vacuum lines connected correctly based on a chart labeled 22R CAL RN 4WD.

Truck seems to be missing an air pump. I can see ports blocked where air pump lines use to be. (I think) I've read a bit on vacuum leaks but I don't really understand how vacuum controls idle on a carb.

Any thought's Yota wizards? Thanks for the help!

-Jonny

There's almost certainly a vacuum leak, or an incorrect basic fuel mixture setting, compounded by an aftermarket carburetor not perfectly suited to your 22R.

It sounds like you're dealing with some frustrating carb issues on your '83 pickup. Since you’ve already replaced the carb and are still having idle problems, it’s likely that you might be facing a vacuum leak or an issue with the adjustment.
