my first 86 4runner

I expected something was wrong with it because it only cost $800 and it is a very nice rig, but then I test drove it for 30 miles and it ran great so I hopped on the freeway and took it the 40 miles home and got off on my exit and it died and has been acting and sounding weird every since and barely wants to run let alone drive. Always dies at Idle. This is my first Toyota and I do not know very much about them and would very much so appreciate the help. the cylinders all have 150 psi and all the plugs are still firing. it's the 22R 4 cyl fuel injected. Perhaps an injector?

first thing-
key off
find the diagnostic plug terminal (the plug is on the passenger side fender, is about 1" x 1.5" and the lid is hinged. on the inside of the lid is a diagram of what the terminals are.
take an unwound paperclip or 3-4" piece of small gauge wire and insert one end into the T1 terminal and the other end into the E1
go into the cab and turn the key on and start counting the check engine light flashes.
It should flash a few times, pause for a second, flash a few more then pause for 2-4 seconds. those flashes form the trouble codes that report problems the ecu has recorded. so 2 flashes, a short pause, 1 flash, long pause would mean code 21. if there are multiple codes, they'll all be displayed in order from lowest to highest. so wait until you see the same code come up a few times to make sure you got them all.
if it flashes rapidly and without pause, there are no codes stored in the ecu.
*edit- and you miss a code, don't worry, it'll keep repeating them over and over.
report back what codes you may or may not get.

@john rumbo- sorry for nitpicking, but they do not have a maf sensor, it's an air-flow meter- afm.

Yeah I looked for the terminal and where it normally is, it isn't? think the person may have removed it?

I know the starter is bad for a fact because I have to hit the starter for it to even start but that wouldn't have anything to do with it staying started.

These starters always go out just keep bangin on it till it dies all together then have it rebuilt. I've yet to buy one of these trucks where the starter wasn't a little "finicky"

You defiantly have a diagnostic box somewhere, the truck wouldn't really run at all without it. Did the truck originally come with the 22RE or was it converted from a carb?

I found them buried underneath the engine then did the whole paper clip in it and all the check engine light was doing is blinking repeatedly on and off. What does this mean?

Well this does not make any sense to me but here it goes:
there were 8 flashes that were 7 seconds apart then a flash 6 seconds away then 18 flashes 5 seconds apart then a flash 4 seconds away then 5 flashes 5 seconds away then a flash 7 seconds away then 12 flashes 5 seconds away then a flash 6 seconds away then 12 flashes 5 seconds away.

after that point I gave up because it was making no sense at all to me.

My 87' 22RE would bog really bad on startup and every now and then just going down the road and i pulled the code and it said it was the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, so i unplugged it and it has ran flawless ever since id go over all your connections and double check everything maybe when you went down the highway something came unplugged ?... im just wondering if this will make it run rich and fail emissions(unplugging the temp sensor) ?

OK so I kind of counted the blinks reasonably and got that it blinked 12 times continuously then paused then did 11 blinks PAUSE then 10 blinks PAUSE 11 blinks PAUSE 11 blinks then repeated itself. I really appreciate the help from all of you. I am only 18 and know hardly anything of mechanics and it's nice to get help from other toyota owners knowing what they're talking about rather then paying $100+ to get it scoped out by a mechanic.
