Mod advice needed
Hi Folks,
I'm new to this board and figured I might as well ask for advice here.
I've been given a 2K budget for a few mods on my uncles 1992 Yota Pickup 2WD, 3VZE Engine. I was wondering what is the best bang for the buck. He keeps talking about putting on an LSD but I've searched high and low and have not had any luck on locating an LSD. Does one exists?
That put aside what other mods should I look into?
Any help would be great!
Thanks
Allen

If you want to go more cosmetic with the truck, an lsd won't exactly increase the blingage (i dont care if its not a real word) too much. Invest in something like nicer wheels, or something along those lines. That's just my opinion though. To each his own... Out of curiosity, why are you looking into getting the lsd in the first place?

I'd say go for some window tint, some interior stuff, maybe some paint and/or tires, and call it a day... Unfortunately $2000 won't get you very far, maybe tint, stereo deck, and tires?

yeah, i would take a 4WD, stock non the less vs. a modified 2WD any day of the week. dont waste money by putting anything into the 2WD.
My opinion ANY truck/SUV that is 2WD is basically worthless.
But i guess that stat i read; something like "only 20% of people with 4WD actually use it" might actually hold water.

2WD has a HUGE ground clearance and wheel travel advantage. Unfortunately, $2000 probably won't do a long travel setup, wheels, and tires - but that's how I would go... Then lock it and have fun!

The 4WD will have 2 wheels spinning no matter what, as will the locked 2WD, but the 4wd's advantage is not only T-case but also it has one tire spinning up front. You have stated one possible (and probably the only) situation where the 2wd MIGHT have more traction, but those situations are easily teaken into account in a 4x4, and the 4wd will excel in anything else. What about when the rear axle has no traction?
I had a buddy that thought he had a pretty nice 2wd Taco with an EZ-locker, but he tried going off-roading with a couple of stock 4x4's, and had the smoke the crap out of his clutch just to try to keep up on some dirt hills and the like. It got real ugly! Crawling over/around rocks was hell on his 2wd too. He was talking about getting a 'Klune V' to get a low range, I told him he was an idiot and to buy a 4x4 instead. He eventually agreed.
Also, 2wd's front wheels tend to just plow when you're trying to move in low traction situations (sand, mud, what-not) but a 4wd's front wheels will spin and help pull the truck in the direction of the wheels.
I stand by my statement, a stock 4x4 will out-wheel a locked 2wd. Case closed.

ANY wheel spinning is a good thing, whether its the front or the rear.
kinda like mastacox put it; the advantage of the 4WD is that you will have at least one wheel spinning on the front axle. not to mention the ability to regear the power to the wheels via a transfer case.
I thought that maybe the TTORA Chapter Pres. would know that, till i read your sig. and saw "Previous - 89 2WD Pickup 22R, Fabtech "Ivan Dan" lift, 31x10.50, IASCA World Finals 4th Place"
You are already a little partial to 2WD arent ya?? Just curious if anyone in that IASCA World Finals that finished ahead of you had 4WD ?? haha just kidding.
maybe u should stick with the car audio stuff, cause i bet a few bucks my almost stock toy will out wheel your 2WD anytime. no offense but just common sense.

You DO realize that the VAST majority of the vehicles in the Baja 500/1000 are 2 wheel drive right? Removing the drive system from the front wheels has many offroad benefits - increased strength, travel, and ground clearance to name a few.
SPINNING wheels don't do ANYTHING for you offroad. Why do you think lockers are so effective? Cuz the one with traction always keeps you moving - not just spinning and making a mess.
True, my 2WD wouldn't go half the places my 4Runner will go now - but locked/locked, geared, and with very aggresive tires, it's about as capable as anything I would want to daily drive (I still want a crawler though!).
Until you 'wheel a locked 2WD, maybe you should keep your posts to your area of expertise.
