MAF with regular filter?
I was just wondering, If I were to change my intake tube to a stainless and my filter to a filter in the open like this one Would I still have to have an MAF? If so do they make aftermarkets that would piece in with the stainless tubing?? I would really like to get rid of the bulky toyota one. I have seen a 2nd gen runner on here with this kind of setup just not sure who it was and I cant find it again. I have searched on here and on google without any luck
TIA

Your truck doesn`t have a MAF, it has an AFM, there is a big difference between the two. The AFM is needed because it tells the fuel pump when to come on and its also part of the fuel injection system.

Can you please explain the difference between MAF and AFM? Can i use a cone filter with an AFM? Is there an aftermarket AFM that will go inline like the one on the Range Rover pictured below? Does the Range Rover have an AFM or MAF?
Sorry for all the questions, I dont really understand the MAF and AFM! I just really want to eliminate alot of the stuff that is on my air intake, I plan on getting rid of the rubber tubing like a thread here shows, but I would also like to use a cone filter!

MAF = MASS AIR FLOW, it is an electronic air sensor that uses a hot wire inside of the MAF sensor to measure the air flow going through it. Do a google search and it will explain it better than i can. AFM = AIR FLOW METER, it is a mechanical air flow meter that has a door that is pushed open by the in coming air, the more air coming in the more the door opens and this sends a signal to the computer for the fuel injection to function. You can buy an adaptor for your AFM so you can use a cone filter, or you can do an AFM swap for more air flow and a small power increase. Doe a search for AFM upgrade. I have upgraded the AFM on my 86 4Runner and i have a cone filter on it, if it was here with me now i would take some pictures for you.

Thanks for your help!! I might have to look into that, I just got my 4runner running better, sad to say but it has more power now than ever before!

From what ive read here, upgrading the AFM on a 3.0 helps a lot, some have also blocked off the EGR and have seen a noticeable gain, and adding headers and a full exhaust is also a big help to the 3.0. I don`t have a 3.0. this is just stuff that ive read here.

I would like to block off the EGR, Ive read the threads on it I just don't really understand what I have to do, or need to do it! I plan on doing a 3.4 swap after I turn 18 and can get a good paying job!

The 3.4 swap would be the best upgrade you could do to your 4Runner.

Back before I found YT I wanted to swap to a Chev 350 but I have put alot of thought into what I want to do with it, and the Chevy's don't last as long as the Toyota Motor so I would be insane to put a chevy motor in a Toyota and the 3.4 swap has been done so many time that all the kinks have been worked out!
