Low on oil but not really?

When I pull my dipstick to check the oil; I see that its about half full and could use a quart or 2. When I open up the engine oil cap; I look inside to see oil almost to the top of the valve cover? I'm pretty sure this isn't normal? Any ideas on why it's saying I'm low on empty but can see lots of oil inside.

You are low on oil. The valve cover has a shelf right there that develops oil residue. Thus you can see oil. Oil is not held anywhere north of the oil pan. It all runs south. Reasoning why you have the oil pump and channels for it to run through. Oil does not FILL up your motor. If your dipstick says your low. you are low.

....x2.

Also, halfway on the dipstick is NOT a quart or TWO....more like a pint or two.

By the way when it reads the add mark on the Dipstick it will take 1 quart to make full.

So if it's half way all you need is 1/2 quart.
