Question Lockers

been looking at many different kinds of lockers.

everywhere from arb
to detroit
to aussie
to powertrax...
and any others out there?

my question is. what is the best locker to go with? i run mostly highway but do alot of mud and crawling on the weekend and im tired of this bullcrap where one wheel is spinning front and back

so whats the best locker for a IFS 87 4runner rear?
front?
i wanna be able to unlock and lock when needed
any other info i need to know before i buy would be helpful

Unlock and lock when needed only two options, elocker or ARB.

Tons of threads and info on lockers, even an FAQ thread.

I would say the toyota e:locker is by far your best bet for reliability and ease of install/operation...

the ARB is a very close second and does add the potential benefit of having an on board air compressor (if you go with a bigger than stock air tank and a whole bunch of other crud...)

If you want to go with a purely mechanical locker set up given your mostly on road use you might get more use out of a limited slip diff. as opposed to a straight locker...

Not sure what the overall statistics say, but I have seen way more busted Toyota e-lockers than ARBs.

i like the fact of both the e locker and arb being able to lock and unlock at any time

here are the problems i see...

arb: fry the compressor cant lock up and get stuck where your at... or air leak
bonus: get a bigger tank can air up and air down tires for crawling

elocker: possibility of shorting or breaking wires

ive read over this thread more and more and still dont know...

whats gonna be the full price for a complete arb system including compresser and all the necesities for just the rear?

and what about the elocker for just the rear with all the necesities

Are you really that concerned about unlocking the rear ?? Imo get a spool or aussie in the rear and wheel like that for a while it's amazing what just having the rear locked will do for you. just my 2 cents.

So ... Theres a million people running lockers in there DD just won't turn as sharp and may churp around corners. I was think from the point of view that 2 ARBs and the compressor is gonna run him close to 1200. one spool is 150. he says he only wheels on the weekend so maybe you have a point 874runnersr5.

874runners hit the nail on the head

i drive it about 50 miles everyday on highway to work and back.

and dont wanna be locked the whole time.

thought about getting elocker both front and rear... or arb for both if i could get a deal on it. but for an arb front and rear its gonna run me more then 2000

where the heck did you find them for 1200? everyone ive talked to said its gonna be more then 2000 for everything

I've been on this site for 2 and a half years, and I still have this same problem. lol. I wanted to lock up the rear, but the ARB is WAAAYY too expensive(about half of the cost of a whole other 4Runner), and the Aussie doesn't unlock, which could be bad on the highway. There's people on here that swear it doesn't make that much of difference, but I just can't bring myself to do it yet. I am heavily leaning toward an Aussie, since they now make one for the V6 housing. At this point, it's not a matter of having the fabled "perfect locker", it's about what I can afford, and what gives me what I want..... and I've narrowed it down to one of two: Aussie, or keeping it stock, and spending the money on 4.88's, which I think would be a better investment for me, since they would be more usefull.

Also, the thought of a locker in the snow/ice, and around corners scares me a little.

I saw them somewhere advertised for 1200 for 2 lockers and a compressor ... but thats no install right .. So by the time you get thim installed your up to 2000 no prob.. I will see if I can find where I saw that

In my opinion a great automatic locker is the Detroit. Love it in my daily driver. Yes it is locked up on the street until you go around a corner and it unlocks automatically. And it's smoother on pavement than any other auto locker I've driven.

yea. i just dont like the fact that detroits unlock when you turn..

does it unlock when your crawlin around a corner?

cuz alot of the trails ive been on your climbing a hill around a turn. and if it disengages id be p.oed

I don't have a Detroit locker but I do run a Detroit Truetrac. I agree with desert though. My buddy dd his 36" iroc'd jeep for YEARS with ne'er a problem. Auto lockers take a little driving finess though. If you like to hammer it around corners on the street then DONT get an auto locker. To me, IMO, it sounds like you'd be happy an LSD like the Truetrac.

had a detroit in my rear axle for nearly 9 years now. Love it. it can snow a lot in utah and it works very well.

lol, well first off you will NOT get a 100 percent lock up like any locker. IIRC they are a little less than a full Detroit locker. You'd have to look it up. There is give and take with this LSD. On road you'll never hear it, off road it's there when you need it. Very well manered in snow pack and predictable on ice. Like I said though, driving finess. Also, this is a geared unit so no clutces or special additives for the diff oil. The bad is it take a preload to engage. Meaning that if you do find your self stop with a loose wheel it may not engage. So you will have to pump the brakes to help engage it. I've had great success with mine for the wheeling I do.
