Locker questions from a noob

I have several questions regarding lockers. First of all, I live in PA and have to deal with snow every now and then. I have never driven a street vehicle with a locker. Drag strip different story.

Now that I got that out of the way, reading these threads here, I assume I would be looking for a limited slip and not a locker?

I might be looking to re-gear as well. at least up to 4:56 from the stock 4:10. To help turn some 31's or possible 33's in the future. for now its the stocker tires.

My questions are what are my options on a junk yard pull 4:10's and 4:56's limited slip or locker (if they even made them) from an OEM toyota for a 1987 pickup 22r carb pickup.

Also what are the differences in driving in snow with a LSD or Locker in the snow vs with open diff.

Thanks for helping the noob out.

Buy an Aussie Locker... Best damn locker made. I'll fist fight anyone who disagree's..

Anyways, if you plan on running 33's or larger, you'll want 5.29 R&P.. 33's to 31's I'd get 4.88's.. Overgearing a bit doesn't hurt, you will only tach 300 RPM higher on the freeway.

And as far as Open Vs. Locked in the winter, just watch the throttle and don't take corners too fast, and if you start slidin, just control it, feather the throttle and slide around that corner like you meant to.

only 31-33, No plans for a lift. Mild wheeling/mud running. I'm not a crawler, I'm more of a desert truck guy and like to keep things a little lower even though I am pretty certain most desert trucks run 35's or something like that.

I've taken my 4runner in the snow... open diff, 4.10s and 31s. it performed just fine. but then again... im in california, and where I live it doesn't snow. only when I go boarding up north. I think you'll be fine as long as you aren't driving like a maniac.

You could get a limited slip out of a Supra:

I like limited slips in the snow, or get a selectable locker like a e-locker out of a newer 4Runner/Tacoma or an ARB.

you can get your 456 or 488 gears out of a junkyard 4runner ( g144 is the code for 488)
look around you find all the gear code info
as for lockers or limited slip
you have a couple options for limtes slip
true trac makes one that works great
you can also put in a limited slip from a supra yr 86 to 92 ( thats what i have works great in ohio winters )
as for locker or limited slip in winter its up to you
but honestly i think your on the right track around PA and OH the lsd works great
a locker would be nice but they do tend to get a little more unstable in or weather and road conditions.
obviously they are the ultimate in traction but i dont think they will give you what you want

If i remember correctly aussie lockers dont do to well in the snow. They make it quite a bit easier to spin out. I would say go with a selectable locker, i know the ARB air locker is like the best one out there.

Although, the aussie locker is cheap and east to install.

EDIT: DAMN! Swaycleveland beat me to it.

E-locker install:

Various years, need to find a vehicle that had one installed as an option.

You can find lots of 4.10 gears in junkyards, but 4.56s are harder to find, and 4.88s are almost non-existent. I would just buy new gears and do the locker all at the same time. I think aussies (or any kind of lunchbox style lockers) aren't near as good in snow as an elocker or an ARB. I drive a lot in snow and have had an aussie in the past and have an ARB now, and the ARB wins hands down. Elocker is just as good as ARB too (maybe better).

I agree with Brian. 4.88s are nearly non-existent. You're better off just building up your own and dropping a locker in there I wont be going cheap with mine. ARB is hands down being put in mine.

wow, didnt think there was so many opinions, no wonder why i am a little confused. I am thinking e-locker, however I dont have welding skills. Are those axle housings transferable from the 4runners to the 87 pickups?

Lots more work, you need to cut off all the coil spring hardware then weld on spring perches, etc. Plus the width on the newer axles is wider.

get a tacoma axle..if you wanna swap the whole axle..since they are leaf sprung!

and so what if they're wider..you can always run wheel spacers up front lmao
