intake questions??

well, i'm gonna be replacing that restrictive airbox with a K&N filter and i noticed the pipe running to the airbox and down the side of the intake pipe.. it looks as if it runs to the thermostat or something, not real sure what its for as i'm new to Toyota pickups.. just wondering if i just cap that off or what..

i'm sure you know what i'm talking about, but here is a pic.. it runs right along the intake pipe and plugs into the airbox..

I release that this doesn't answer your question, however to save you some time/money work, replacing the "restrictive airbox" with a K&N isn't going to gain you anything at all.
Well on second thought it may gain you some better mileage and add some power as you're be carrying less weight. You wallet will be lighter

Not to mention that they also let a ton of crap through.
Basically anything smaller than an 18 wheeler will get through

so, uhh.. what would you guys suggest then.. what filter if K&Ns are bad for the MAF?? .and should i just do a drop in filter or what?

i plan on doing the TRD level1 cam, header, exhaust, and less restrictive intake pipe later down the road..

and as far as the K&N letting crap through, i've never heard that.. and its not like i'm gonna be offroading and .. its a 2wd daily driver.. i just want some more umph from the motor

well with a 22R-E, there is not that much you can do until you get the TRD cams that will gain you power other than maybe going with a staight pipe exhaust, even then it's only a 4cyl. maybe getting the Turbo from the original 22R-TE from prior to 1988. hope that helps.

i don't think the 22R-TE has "gobs" of power, but it i supposed to produce around the same as the 3VZ-E...i think, i have not dealt with the 22R-TE personally, but there are a few here on Yotatech that could help you. also, i know some people put on custom turbos on the 22R-E and it does produce more power than with out it, but of course when you stick on a turbo your fuel economy goes down. hope that helps

Well you can get a "more aggressive sound" from a simple muffler change.
Regarding power, since it's a 2wd and on road vehicle, you probably should have looked at getting something else that would have suited you needs a little better to begin with. That way you wouldn't be dumping the money into what you have with a cam, etc.
May not be too late. Have you considered selling what you now have and picking up something a little more angled towards your needs ?

why would you plug the pipe? unless it is acutally supposed to be hooked to something then maybe have a look for a nob that looks like it should have something on it, but it might be a drain! so it might not be a good idea

Well, not 100% sure. Mine has a little different set up, but I'm fairly sure that is for emissions. You live in CA, so I'd leave it alone until you find out for sure. Otherwise, you may not be passing next time around.

Since you live in CA, you're going to be a little more limited in what you can do, air intake wise, and still stay legal with emissions.

I'm with Ike that my setup is different in that I don't have that secondary tube. Being in CA you're probably going to have to leave it alone. IIRC the TRD cam is CA smog legal so you're OK there. Also try LC Engineering for their complete exhaust (header, cat, and cat-back) as I think they are CA legal also. Call them though because it is NOT prominently displayed on their site which I find kind of odd. Most companies make a big deal out of that.

FWIW, mine is CA smogged. It has all sorts of excess crap to do that, but no secondary tube. Check it out, as you don't want to get screwed with the emissions guys.

So what are you still trying to do ?
We already know that adding a K&N isn't going to help a bit and, in fact, will let a lot more crap through into the engine.
