Im thinking about switching my 89 cab on my 1989 toyota 4x4 reg cab to the 96+ cab

is it possible to switch cabs like that? basically change the whole bodystyle, the cab and the bed, from my 89 reg cab to like a 96+ cab? is that possible? if so how much would it cost?

I think it's possible, the dash/guage cluster is basically the same on these trucks. I'm over in Afghanistan right now and they have toyota's that have the taco body and they are on the older IFS frame so I think the mounts are basically located in the same spot. Some problems I'd see are getting a newer cab without buying the whole truck (96+ really don't have the blown V6 engine problem like our generation does). If you get a good deal on one it's probably been wrecked and then the body work would be a PITA. I'm running this idea over cause I'd like a 4 door. The other problem is taco's are so ugly compared to the 89-95..........

One issue to consider is titling with your local DMV and emissions

That's another issue I was curious about. Theorectically it should go by the frame but.....probably depends who is working at the DMV that day. I mention the dash guages being the same because you're probably going to be into some wiring, but the guage clusters being the same you should be able to keep your guage/dash wiring with your ECU. I'm not sure what'd be the easiest going cross generation like this. I swapped in a diesel from the same generation (but RHD) and was able to use the diesel guage wiring (needed to for glow plugs, etc) and just 'flipped' it to LHD.

I would ask why??

unless you have all the parts sitting right at hand and paid for.

It would be easier to just go buy the year you want cheaper too if you need to go round up all the parts .

Having done one auto to manual swap without having the whole parts vehicle a few steps away. The trips to the dealer the local auto parts as well as yard hunting were way to many to mention.

I can`t see a cab swap being all that much different

I guess it comes down to where your skills lie and the time you have.
